Student Publications
Scope and Contents
This collection consists of publications created by Pratt Institute graduate and undergraduate students dating from 1940 to the present.
The largest section of the Student Publications collection consists of issues of the long-running student publication, the Prattler, which has provided campus news, write-ups and reviews of events and exhibitions, sports updates, editorial columns, reviews of theatrical performances, commentary on student activities, coverage of student protest and activism, and other news reports since the 1940s.
Additionally, the collection contains multiple publications dating from 1951 up until 2023 containing original works of composition and graphic art created by Pratt students over the years including the Asterisk, Hatch, Snake Roots, Static Fish, Ubiquitous, and various other smaller run student publications (DRUM, Granada Review, The Felt, etc.). Themes covered and introduced by the artwork and writing of these publications include social and cultural commentary surrounding issues of the day, student life, and reflections on the art world and industry. Within these publications, the students utilize and explore a wide range of illustrative styles and artistic techniques in these publications including collage, photography, painting, graphic design, and drawing.
While the majority of the materials in the collection consists of individual issues and bound volumes, there are also zines, comic books, and a few compact discs with original music.
Additional publications created by specific departments or schools can be found in their records. Pratt Institute course catalogs and related materials are included in Catalogs and Bulletins Collection (PI-004) while Institute Publications are included in Institute Publications Collection (PI-007).
